Supraspinatus Impingement Syndrome

I really wrecked my shoulder skimming on the sand in Maui.. what was I thinking, I'm over 50 now.. in the end it took almost a year to get my shoulder back to normal. Don't wait to treat a shoulder injury, it gets worse with time. It may turn into a :Supraspinatus Impingement".

This is a very common condition that results in chronic nearly constant pain to the region between the shoulder and the base of the neck. The muscles utilized to elevate the shoulder and arm are weakened or injured such that they lose their ability to guide the scapula and humerus properly. This results in the impingement (pinching) of the Supraspinatus muscle as illustrated in Fig 1. Weakness of the muscles that move the scapula is a very typical cause for the impingement. Identifying which muscle or muscles are weak is the first step in solving this problem. A targeted strengthening program can help restore proper tracking to the shoulder. In conjunction with joint manipulation the problem can eventually be eliminated.
