What Joints Does a Chiropractor Adjust?

A chiropractor performs chiropractic manipulation or adjustment, which is a common treatment for back pain. The aim of chiropractic care is to decrease subluxation in order to improve range of motion, alleviate nerve irritability and enhance function. The chiropractor will apply manipulation to the vertebrae with abnormal function or movement patterns. Unluckily for those experiencing recurrent joint pain, waking up in the morning could be a burden. In this article, you will learn about what the chiropractor does and how they can provide relief from joint pain.

What the chiropractor does

The primary function of the chiropractor is to adjust the spine. They remove inhibitions present in the vertebrae of the spine, consequently alleviating pain and improving mobility. However, they also have the skills to cater to the joints. Just like they adjust the spine, chiropractors can also adjust the joints to alleviate tension and improve functionality. The process may sound a bit daunting at first, but it is easy and painless. This treatment has helped many patients get quick relief from debilitating pain.

Chiropractic manipulation is a precise and controlled thrust often done manually using hands, but in some cases, a handheld device might be used to restore the state and function of a joint. For most chiropractors, this is the basic treatment method when beginning the treatment routine. Several techniques of adjustments are available, and the chiropractor will work with the patient to decide the most appropriate technique for the patient and their condition.

That is not all

Chiropractors help to adjust joints when they have a limited range of motion, leading to pain and dysfunction. A limited range of motion causes stress, not only to the joint, but also the surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments. This can cause pain or tissue damage if left untreated. A chiropractic adjustment will reinstate normal motion to the joints to ensure efficient function.

During manipulation, the patient may hear a cracking noise. The sound is produced when the carbon dioxide trapped in the dysfunctional joint is released by the adjustment procedure. The doctor will evaluate each patient individually to determine if an adjustment would be effective for them. This means that patients are ultimately part of the treatment process and can be sure they are getting the correct treatment for their condition.

What joints do chiropractors treat?

The question is if chiropractors can adjust or manipulate any joint in the body. The answer is not straightforward. Patients who visit the chiropractor for manipulation often have issues related to the back and neck, wrists, knees, elbows, ankles and shoulders. Applying manipulation in those parts of the body may significantly alleviate pain and improve the range of motion of the affected joint.

Final note

Many people nowadays understand that joint pain is a necessary evil sometimes, so they might just decide to live with the condition. However, with effective treatment and techniques available to provide lasting relief, there is no reason to live with the pain. Visiting a chiropractor for joint pain is a quick and effective way to get relief. And knowing how often you use your joints, it might be the best decision ever.
